Community Life

Social Justice

Extending Christian compassion by encouraging justice through learning, ministry and service to those in need in the congregation and community.

The official definition of this group's mandate is a daunting one, however in day to day activities it means being aware of our neighbours and reaching out with whatever help we can provide as it is needed.

Ascension does this in many ways. We collect for the Food Bank, maintain a church pantry for those who may come to the door, provide meals to those who are sick, or grieving. As well, we provide lunch and Christmas gift sacks to the Inner City Pastoral Ministry, and assemble and donate food/gift hampers for the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton.

Supporting development overseas through contributions to Canadian Lutheran World Relief as well as our designated Ministry Project are other ways that we share with the larger world community.

Justice means sharing what God has provided us with any who are in need.

Not so big a task after all...

CLWR (Canadian Lutheran World Relief)

Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is one of Canada’s oldest relief and development agencies. Formed in 1946 as a response to the humanitarian crisis in post-war Europe, the current scope of CLWR’s work has grown to include emergency relief, community development, refugee resettlement and alternative trade.

Development work is focused in Zambia, Mozambique, India, Bolivia and Peru. The alternative trade program of CLWR imports from Latin America, Africa and Asia. Relief commodities are shipped to where most needed and to where we can most effectively transport, this primarily being in Africa. Only four cents of every dollar donated to CLWR is spent on adminstration costs.

An ecumenical partnership working to promote human rights, justice and peace, viable human development, and ecological justice.

The Inner City Pastoral Ministry is an interdenominational faith outreach program formed in 1978 and incorporated under the Societies Act in 1994 to provide pastoral care in Edmonton's Boyle-McCauley neighbourhoods. Each year Ascension provides lunch for the ‘Community of Emmanuel’ which is the name of the Sunday worshippers at the Inner City Pastoral Ministry. As well, we collect items throughout December for ICPM Christmas Gift Sacs and distribution in the inner city.
